My Top Hip Hop Albums

"My apartment is too nice to play rap in"

- Kanye West

My favorite genre has a lyrical element and an energy that turns me on. It takes something novel to be elevated into my all-time list. As much as I love Gucci Mane, you won't find him here. Novelty happens; in every genre but in this little niche of hip hop its something special and transcendent when it happens and I'm keyed into the culture and can appreciate the waves an album makes. These are albums I believe did something new and all of them have "it" but the differentiation between the tiers is based on an intellectual/musical position the album brought to attention.

Tier One
Get Rich or Die Trying
The Cool

Tier Two
My Dark Twisted Fantasy
Channel Orange
Good Kid Maad City
Her Favorite Colo(u)r - Blu (good luck, ya bish)

???
To Pimp a Butterfly

The album has to settle and the reverberations have to actualize, in order for me to place an album. When Lupe's most recent album came out, I was astounded, and ready to place it somewhere close to The Cool. Well, it didn't last. King Kendrick came along and took custody of hip hop and left Lupe forgotten (again), unable to shed his label of being washed up.
